UNPERSONAL RECOLLECTION (2008-2013)
I seek objects, accumulate them, and break them apart to extract what is essential to me: a fragment, just enough to trigger a memory. I capture a shape by impressing material into a mould, much as a photographer captures an image by impressing light onto film. I am interested in the effect, or illusion, of reality produced by this process. I use casting and pouring materials such as metals, resins, and silicones to fill shapes with new and unexpected content. My jewels are traces of possible lives, memories of something that did not happen but could have happened.
The project was informed by Italo Calvino’s The Adventure of a Photographer (L’avventura di un fotografo), from Difficult Loves, in which photography becomes a way of fixing, reconstructing and ultimately transforming lived experience into memory.
